Inspector Re-certification

After initial certification as a fire or building inspector in the state of Tennessee, an individual has three (3) years to obtain recertification (i.e. certification received in 2008, recertification in 2011).

There are currently three methods approved by the State Fire Marshal's Office to achieve re-certification:

  1. Attend and complete state-approved training courses amounting to a total of thirty-six (36) hours of continuuing education.  Proof of completion must be submitted to the State Fire Marshal's Office.  Generally, most classes provide a Recertification Hours Claim form which must be submitted to the State within 90 days of the class to receive credit.
  2. Successful completion of an examination administered at the discretion of the State Fire Marshal's Office.
  3. Successful completion during the three (3) year period of the next higher level of certification offered by an recognized and approved certifying organization.

Generally, most fire and building inspectors participate in courses offered during the TFSIA Annual Training Conference or accumulate hours by attending TFACA classes offered on campus and throughout the state.
